Welcome to West Suburban Animal Hospital
West Suburban Animal Hospital has been serving Sylvania and the greater Toledo, OH pet community since 2001. We are a state-of-the-art, full-service facility with Northwest Ohio’s only Board-Certified Specialist Practice, Dr. Gary Thompson. Our veterinarians and team are committed to providing personal attention to the unique concerns of each individual pet and owner. As pet owners, we would expect nothing less for our four-legged family members!
What is a Board-Certified Specialist?
Dr. Gary Thompson is a Board-Certified Specialist in Canine and Feline Practice, but what does that mean? Veterinary medicine has an assortment of specialists similar to those in human medicine (i.e. cardiologists, radiologists, surgeons, etc.). Canine and feline practice is one of more than 20 specialties currently recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
Specialty certification requires completing 3 to 6 years of training in the area of specialization beyond the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Applicants must complete comprehensive training as well as submit proof of expertise to a review board in their specialty college. Once approved, they then earn the title of “Board-Certified Specialist” or “diplomate” of the respective college.

The facility is top-notch but is surpassed by the staff. They were all so attentive, friendly, and professional! This was my first visit with my new puppy but I have had dogs all my life and was particularly impressed by this group. I would highly recommend them!
