Pet Vaccinations

At West Suburban Animal Hospital, we take a personalized approach to your pet’s vaccination protocol. While there are some vaccines we recommend for all pets based on guidelines from the American Animal Hospital Association and the Association of Feline Practitioners, others are recommended based on your pet’s individual lifestyle. Our veterinarians will work with you to determine the best vaccine plan for your pet that offers the highest protection with the lowest risk.

WHAT VACCINES DOES MY PET NEED?

Some vaccines are recommended for every pet, regardless of lifestyle. These are called “core” vaccines and they protect against very dangerous and highly contagious diseases. Meanwhile, there are more vaccines called lifestyle vaccines which we recommend based off your pet’s unique lifestyle. We look at your pet’s age, breed, health, how often they’re outdoors, and if and where they travel.

HOW OFTEN DOES MY PET NEED VACCINES?

Your pet will require routine booster vaccines throughout their lives. They’ll begin their vaccinations as puppies and kittens when they’ll receive a series of the core vaccines and any lifestyle vaccines we recommend. After their initial series, adult cats and dogs will require routine boosters. Depending on the vaccine manufacturer’s guidelines, the core vaccines can be given either annually or triennially. Lifestyle vaccines are usually given on an annual basis. Your veterinarian will discuss your pet’s timeline with you and determine the best options for them!
